Child Protection and Prevention of Sexual Exploitation, Abuse, and Harassment (PSEAH) Policy

Context
Check-IN Association acknowledges the importance of ensuring a safe environment for everyone involved in its activities, with a special focus on the protection of minors and vulnerable groups. This policy outlines the principles and procedures to prevent and respond to situations of sexual exploitation, abuse, harassment, discrimination, and other violations of rights.

Legal and Regulatory Framework
This policy is based on:

  • United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC);
  • Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW);
  • Relevant Portuguese and European legislation;
  • Check-IN Association’s internal Code of Conduct.

Definitions

  • Child: A person under the age of 18.
  • Sexual Exploitation: The use of power, authority, or vulnerability to obtain sexual favors.
  • Sexual Abuse: Any sexual act without consent, including the abuse of minors.
  • Sexual Harassment: Unwanted sexual advances or comments.
  • Discrimination: Unfair treatment based on gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, among others.

PSEAH: Acronym for Prevention of Sexual Exploitation, Abuse, and Harassment

Scope of Application.
This policy applies to:

  • Employees, volunteers, consultants, and interns;
  • Partners, service providers, and suppliers;
  • Project participants and beneficiaries of Check-IN activities.

Core Principles

  • Zero tolerance for any form of abuse or exploitation;
  • Respect for human dignity in all interactions;
  • Active prevention through training and awareness;
  • Shared responsibility among all involved;
  • Transparency in communication and response processes;
  • Support for victims with referrals to specialized services.

Preventive Measures

  • Background and reference checks during recruitment;
  • Mandatory training on child protection and PSEAH;
  • Code of Conduct signed by all collaborators;
  • Ongoing monitoring of activities involving minors;
  • Informed consent from legal guardians.

Reporting Mechanisms

  • Dedicated email: protecao@checkin.org.pt;
  • Anonymous or identified reporting form;
  • Confidential and retaliation-free handling;
  • Internal investigation and response within 48 hours;
  • Referral to competent authorities if necessary.

Support for Survivors

  • Empathetic and safe support;
  • Referral to psychological, medical, and legal services;
  • Follow-up and well-being monitoring;
  • Involvement of the person in decisions about their process.

Community Engagement and Partnerships

  • Awareness-raising among local communities about the policy;
  • Inclusion of partners in protection practices;
  • Regular training for staff and partners.

Policy Review
This policy will be reviewed every two years or after any relevant incident, with input from the team, partners, and beneficiaries.
